Qigong & Self-Care: Simple Practices for Everyday Wellbeing
Qigong is a traditional Chinese practice that combines gentle movement, breathing and focused attention. It has been practised in China for centuries and is commonly used as part of a healthy lifestyle and self-care routine. Simple Qigong exercises can be adapted to different ages and levels of physical ability.
What Is Qigong?
Qigong is a traditional mind-body practice within Chinese culture. It usually combines slow, gentle movements with relaxed breathing and mental focus. Some exercises are performed standing, while others can be practised sitting, making Qigong accessible to many people.
What Happens During a Qigong Session?
During a Qigong session, you may be guided through simple movements, breathing exercises and periods of quiet relaxation. The emphasis is generally on moving comfortably and naturally rather than using force or trying to achieve difficult physical positions.
Do I Need Previous Experience?
No previous experience is necessary. Beginners can start with simple movements and gradually become familiar with the basic principles of posture, breathing and relaxation. Exercises can be adapted according to your individual ability and circumstances.
What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Special equipment is usually not required. Comfortable flat shoes may be worn, depending on the type of practice and where the session takes place.
How Long Does a Qigong Session Last?
Our individual Qigong training sessions are 40 minutes and are provided online via Zoom on a one-to-one basis. During the session, exercises can be demonstrated and guided according to your individual ability and needs. Simple exercises can then be practised regularly at home as part of your everyday self-care routine.
Qigong for Relaxation and Wellbeing
Many people practise Qigong as a gentle way to relax, become more aware of their breathing and movement, and take time away from the pressures of everyday life. Regular practice can form part of a balanced approach to general wellbeing alongside appropriate exercise, rest and healthy lifestyle habits.
Can Qigong Be Practised at Home?
Yes. Once you are familiar with suitable exercises and correct basic movements, many simple Qigong practices can be continued at home. Regular short periods of comfortable practice may be easier to maintain than occasional long sessions.
Is Qigong Suitable for Everyone?
Qigong can often be adapted to different levels of mobility and physical ability. However, exercises should always be performed within a comfortable range. If you have a medical condition, significant pain, balance difficulties, are recovering from surgery or are unsure whether an exercise is suitable for you, please seek appropriate medical advice before starting.
Practising Qigong Safely
Qigong should feel comfortable and should not involve forcing movements or holding uncomfortable positions. Move gently, breathe naturally and stop if you experience pain, dizziness or feel unwell. If you have any concerns about your health or your ability to exercise safely, please seek appropriate medical advice.
