Understanding Acupuncture: What to Expect at Your First Visit

Acupuncture is one of the main therapies used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. If you are considering acupuncture for the first time, you may naturally have questions about what happens during a consultation, how treatment is carried out and what you may experience during your visit.

What Happens During Your First Consultation?

During your first visit, we will take time to discuss your main health concerns, medical history, lifestyle and general wellbeing. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, we may also consider factors such as sleep, digestion, energy levels and other relevant symptoms to build a broader picture of your health.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Assessment

As part of the assessment, we may observe the tongue and feel the pulse, alongside discussing your symptoms and overall health. These traditional methods help us understand your individual pattern from a Chinese Medicine perspective and guide the choice of acupuncture points for your treatment.

What Happens During Acupuncture Treatment?

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, single-use needles at carefully selected points on the body. The choice of points is tailored to your individual assessment. Most people find acupuncture comfortable and relaxing, although you may notice sensations such as a mild tingling, heaviness or warmth around some acupuncture points.

How Long Does an Acupuncture Session Last?

A typical acupuncture session lasts around 50 minutes. During this time, we will review how you are feeling, carry out the acupuncture treatment and allow time for you to rest with the needles in place. Your first appointment may take slightly longer to allow time for consultation and assessment.

How Many Acupuncture Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions varies from person to person and depends on factors such as your health concerns, how long you have had them and how you respond to acupuncture. After your initial consultation, we will discuss a treatment plan with you and review your progress as treatment continues.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when carried out by a properly trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Mild temporary effects such as slight bruising, tenderness or a small amount of bleeding at the needle site can occasionally occur. Before treatment, please tell us about any medical conditions, medications, pregnancy or other health concerns that may be relevant.

What Should I Do Before My Acupuncture Appointment?

Before your appointment, it is advisable to have a light meal and avoid arriving very hungry or immediately after a large meal. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing where possible. Please also bring details of any medications you are taking and let us know about any relevant medical conditions or changes in your health.

After Your Acupuncture Treatment

Most people can return to their normal daily activities after acupuncture. You may feel relaxed following treatment, so it can be helpful to take things gently and stay well hydrated. If you experience anything unexpected or have any concerns after your treatment, please contact the clinic for advice.
